"Obsessed" is unusually usual. For a spell, you'll be a wee bit annoyed. But darn, its eventual suspense, long awaited, is surprising. Watch State of Play Online Free

The theme is old enough. Hell hath no fury like a temptress frustrated. It was exploited to DVDs. The current film works it over more simply using an almost old-fashioned style -- no hard-nosed camera movements, no slo-mo, no compulsive close-ups. OK, no complaint there, but then what is its hook? No, Mr. director Steve Shill, you're not going to satisfy us with leading music that overwhelms the routine action. I assure you, we do notice that.

But hey, to your credit, I did appreciate the remarkable suspense toward the end, amazing, really, considering the unremarkable plot drama. Actually, though, that suspense is mostly due to the traditional American moviegoer's rage at injustice done by a nasty villain on a fine and wholesome hero. And in this case, when the predator is a blond, conniving white woman over a refined and upstanding African-American family man, there's the fuel for a plot's momentum. Although race is kept entirely out of the story, the overview is there.

This vixen lady is a temp worker, Lisa (Ali Larter) who spots her prey in handsome Derek Charles (Idris Elba), a commanding figure in his profession as a financial asset executive veep, alone with him on the office elevator. Actually, beyond design, she enters into a delusory state in which she really believes that he is in love with her, giving a special potency to her drive. An exquisite blond of both natural and calculated sensuality, she makes her moves with no reservation. But cultured pro that he is, he maintains his refined gentlemanly demeanor and does not respond.

At least not for the moment.

For Lisa, never mind that Derek is a very happily married man with an adoring wife, the beautiful Sharon (Beyoncé Knowles) who gave up her Ph.D course to be a loving and caring responsible mother and wife, and a healthy and beautiful child, not to say a beautiful new home.

Lisa starts the stalk. She is an operator, a diabolical, ruthless one. Efficient and subtly driven, she can be very dangerous in her strategies and tactics, contriving sites and situations which are fertile with sexual possibilities. He needs to do almost nothing overt in order to find himself in trouble. She proceeds to put Derek's entire life in peril. The conflict is so laden with terror that Derek's measures to protect himself and his life in themselves will be dangerous.

Despite all this, the film takes too long to get itself into high gear. The early face-offs are too mild, too expected, worth no more than a shrug. Ali Larter, however, is nowhere lacking. She is quite the delicious come-on for any red-blooded male. But her lines are so commonplace, given the circumstances. And the ending improbabilities are too obvious and too many.

Beyonce Knowles is excellent. She owns any frame and any scene she's in. Idris Elba as the targeted male is functional.

Hang in there for the final suspense. You may almost feel that that your money was well spent. Watch State of Play Online Free
